What a pool deck has to do

Grip when wet

This is the safety requirement and it drives everything else. A deck that's beautiful and slick is a failure.

Stay walkable barefoot

Dark, glossy surfaces in Texas sun get hot enough that nobody wants to cross them in July. Color and texture both matter.

Handle chlorine

Splash-out and spilled chemicals will discolor or degrade a system that wasn't specified for it.

Survive UV

Same rule as any outdoor slab. Sun destroys the wrong materials.

Take freeze-thaw

We do get freezes. Water in a surface that expands when it freezes causes spalling.

What we do about it

Slip resistance gets engineered into the system rather than added at the end. We steer color choice toward what stays cooler in full sun, select materials for chlorine exposure and UV stability, and finish the deck so water sheds toward drainage rather than pooling.

Choosing your system

We usually recommend

Quartz Epoxy — The best slip resistance of anything we install. The textured aggregate grips wet feet, the build thickness takes abuse, and it's the same system used around commercial pools — for exactly these reasons.

Also consider

Concrete Stain — With a slip-resistant additive in the sealer, if you want a more natural look and your deck is in good condition.

Flake Epoxy — Workable with the right topcoat and a texture additive.

We won’t install

Metallic Epoxy — on a pool deck. It's slick when wet, it gets hot, and the clear coat won't survive the UV. Anyone who offers to is selling you a floor they know will fail.

Common questions

How hot does it get barefoot?

Depends heavily on color and texture. Lighter colors and textured finishes are meaningfully cooler than a dark gloss surface. We'll show you options that make sense for the sun your deck gets.

Will chlorine discolor it?

Not with a system specified for pool environments. Rinse splash-out and spilled chemicals when you notice them and it's a non-issue.

Can you do the coping and steps too?

Yes — and steps especially should get extra slip treatment. We'll include it in the scope.
